Question 3:
Good morning class – last evening we addressed personal obstacles and resources. What is one your obstacles? How do you plan to address/resolve the same?

  1. To be financially stable and not live paycheck to paycheck. Making an effort to pay bills on time and think twice before I make a purchase. Thinking of my needs and not my wants. And I now pay attention to my credit score, something I have not done in the past.

  2. One of my obstacles and the biggest one is that I always worry about the next persons need. I have a problem with seeing a family member or a friend with an empty fridge or with a shut off notice (if they have kids and are single). I struggle for many years to make ends meet while raising my children as a single parent and seeing loved ones struggling when I know I can help is not acceptable to me. I know I have to care and help "me" first and that's why this financial literacy class is a good resource for me. Im confident that with the tools being provided to me, I will be able to make certain adjustments and still continue to help the ones I love and care for.

    1. Hi Laura, it's really hard when you have family in need. Whenever my brothers need money I usually help out, like how do I say no when they have kids to feed. Perhaps it may be helpful if you outline your financial goals, that way you know how much you need to be saving each month and what other accomplishments to hope to achieve. Then you can determine how much each month you can put aside to help family members, let's call is the "Family help fund." That way helping is on your terms and you budgeted for this expense. Perhaps they didn't ask a certain month, you can either put that money in your savings or you can put it in the "family help fund" you set a limit on what you can give each month to help family members. I think I'll try this out myself!

    2. Shenice that is a wonderful idea being that I know for a fact that I can't see myself not helping others. U will definitely put that idea into practice.

  3. My resource is this class, and my brother, and close friends. My obstacle is how I address my situation. I am horrible with math in general, my biggest fear is not being able to learn for lack of my math skills. After attending this class of to this point, my self confidence is improving.

    1. I am happy to hear your self confidence is improving, Nancy. And there are definitely ways to accommodate for the math skills. Maybe there is even an app available if you have a smart phone to assist you. It will all work out!

  4. One of my obstacles is my own knowledge of literacy and how I feel about my finances. I am stressed, and do try to avoid it. I will try my best to confront my stress. This class will provide me with the knowledge and support to take on this obstacle so I can tackle it with confidence.

    1. I know the same stress in my lack of knowledge. I have always avoided anything more difficult than a checking account because I was set on not ever asking for help. You are young enough yet to get ahead of this for yourself. We will continue supporting each other in this class.

    2. Thanks for the words of encouragement Nancy! Yes, let us continue to support each other!

  5. One of my obstacles is my awareness of my financial situation and actually applying change. I am changing my mindset to positive thinking and really am going to put in action to save my money and build my credit.

    1. Hi Jessica,

I complete understand this. I find applying change difficult as well. You are already changing your mindset by seeking assistance for resources such as CRT. You are also allowing yourself to be vulnerable and being open to feedback and assistance on your financial struggles from those who have shared your struggle and I believe that is a powerful thing. I know the journey may be difficult, but the destination will be beautiful and worth it all.

    2. Wow, thank you Toya. That really means a lot to me. I'm really hard on myself and sometimes I need to hear reminders of the progress I am making. Again, thank youo for your encouragement and I am positive that you are on your way to that deposit. Speak it into existence.

  6. One of my obstacles in my life is my lack of financial knowledge to make smart passive income. I have many goals in life such as buying two houses in the near future, furthering my education in a Spanish speaking country for max two years and traveling the world. I need to learn the tricks and the trade to passive income if I am to make these dreams come true. The way I plan to overcome these obstacles is by taking this class, putting my dreams down on paper, creating a vision board, listening to financial podcasts, and signing up for passive income courses and reading books. Please feel free to share with me your resources!

    1. Hi Shenice it sounds like you are very aware of the steps that need to be taken in order to reach your goals. Planning and constantly educating yourself are major keys to success. If I come across any resources I will share them with you.

    2. Shenice, those are some real great goals. I have written a list of things I want to accomplish financially. But the lack of resources and knowledge impacts my ability to think that they can even be achievable.

    3. Hi Shenice,
I get it...If I had the financial knowledge that I needed I wouldn't be in my financial boat deep underwater...knowledge is power!

  7. My biggest obstacle is saving. If I see the money in my account, I use it. I have plenty of reasons to use the money because I "need it" for something which is usually related to something not important or applying it to my credit cards. My solution is to open a CD account in the next few weeks. If I don't see it, I know I cannot spend it. In addition, knowing I have money I cannot easily access I am hoping is the best way for me to lessen my spending on my credit cards, especially now I am learning what the real purpose of credit cards are.

    1. Hey Toya I thought about doing that as well (cd) but maybe take it a step futher and test your self set up a savings just for your future don't attach it to your bank card so that the only way to get it is to actually go to the back (I hate having to drive to my bank) I don't know if it will help you but think about it and im glad you are taking steps to better your future

    2. Hi Toya obtaining a CD is a great idea. I agree with you if the money isn't easily accessed then it cant be spent. I too understand that there is always something that is needed, which makes it difficult to save any money.

    3. I really like that idea Toya. I think that a CD vs savings account will help me save with more confidence. Having a savings account were you have to drive to the bank to withdrawal I consider that to be ease of access to me vs having your funds put into an account that you can't easily withdraw from.

  8. One of my obstacles well my biggest obstacle is poverty thinking. Somedays I feel like I cant handle all the things I need to. Like my plates is supporting 20 servings of food and if anything else is put on it will all topple over. I doubt myself a lot and fear of failing sometimes hold me back from attempting. I plan on overcoming it by continuing to baby step into prosperity thinking. To live by my mantra as best as possible and to believe in myself. I cant do it.

    1. I'm with you Aisha, sometimes I don't see my thinking for what it really is: Poverty Thinking. I hope that equipping myself with knowledge will allow me to move more into Prosperity Thinking.

    2. I can definitely relate to overthinking. I overthink and apply pressure and then I get overwhelmed. Hopefully, by the end of the class we will be able to turn over thinking into organized thinking instead.

  9. My personal obstacle is living from pay check to pay. Its seems virtually impossible to save any money when there is always something NEEDED. My resource is this financial literacy course. In the past I have planned budget, but I have never been able to follow through more than 30 days because a necessity was needed. My goal is to plan a realist budget and follow through in order to achieve my short and long term goals.

    2. Hello Ashley,
I have that same obstacle. I live paycheck to paycheck as well and it seems I never have enough to save. However, I always think even the smallest amount will soon add up. Hang in there!

    1. Hello Shacoya, it sounds like you were able to get some things done. Take it one thing at a time and prioritize. Think of what options you may have like, Uber, Lyft,or carpooling. Hope it all works out.

  11. My biggest obstacle is budgeting. However, I need to learn to save and be more discipline with frivolous spending. I have so many obstacles I can't narrow it down to just one. I am hoping to get better at one at a time.
